Short characteristics:

Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) is a highly regarded traditional herb widely used for its diverse medicinal properties. Its spasmolytic alkaloids help relax smooth muscles in the urinary and biliary tracts, assisting in the expulsion of kidney and gallstones. Clinical studies confirm its effectiveness not only in breaking down stones but also in preventing their formation. Additionally, decoction from Chanca Piedra regulates uric acid levels and acts as a diuretic, stimulating bile production and improving digestion. The herb has proven antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pasteurella pestis, and exhibits antiviral effects, notably against hepatitis B virus. Its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antispasmodic effects make it helpful in treating kidney and urinary tract infections, gall bladder issues, and viral liver inflammation (hepatitis). It’s also used in the management of gastrointestinal disorders, abdominal pain, colic, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, prostatitis, fever, sexually transmitted infections, asthma, bronchitis, and cold symptoms. Due to its broad spectrum, Chanca Piedra is also applied in dermatology for skin conditions and parasitic infections, making it a versatile and valuable natural remedy.

The usual way of use:

Pour 1-2 tablespoons of dried herb with approx. 700 ml of cold water and boil on low heat for 7 minutes after reaching boiling point. Strain. Drink throughout the day.

Powdered herbal extract, whether in capsules or in powder form, should be taken twice a day. The dose depends on the potency—please follow the instructions on the label or consult your health practitioner for guidance.

The length of the cure is individual. We saw cases when even one single dose helped expel  a fairly large stone but in some cases, weeks of use are needed.

Composition

Chanca Piedra’s medicinal effects are attributed to its rich array of bioactive compounds, including:

  • Alkaloids: The plant contains several alkaloids, notably phyllanthellinphyllanthin, and hypophyllanthin, which have been shown to possess antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective activities.
  • Lignans and flavonoids: These polyphenolic compounds exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects that support tissue healing and immune function.
  • Tannins: These phenolic compounds contribute to its astringent, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Steroids and diterpenes: Contribute to anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects.

The synergistic actions of these compounds make Chanca Piedra highly effective in supporting detoxification and tissue regeneration.

Traditional Use

For centuries, indigenous tribes in Peru and neighboring regions have relied on Phyllanthus niruri for its medicinal properties, notably:

  • Kidney and gallstones (Calculus): Its most famous use is to support the breakdown and elimination of stones in the urinary and biliary tracts. The plant’s name, “stone breaker,” reflects this traditional application.
  • Liver health: Decoctions of the plant are consumed to alleviate jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver disorders, supporting detoxification and regeneration.
  • Digestive problems: Used to treat stomach pains, indigestion, diarrhea, and parasitic infections, thanks to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions.
  • Infections: Its antibacterial and antiviral properties help combat infections, including respiratory and intestinal ones.
  • Overall vitality: Traditionally, it’s also used as a general tonic to boost immune health and increase energy.

The plant is typically prepared as a tea, infusion, or extract, often used in combination with other medicinal herbs.

Precautions and Possible Interactions

While Phyllanthus niruri has a long history of safe traditional use, modern scientific data suggest that caution should be exercised:

  • Drug interactions: Because of its effects on the liver and kidneys, it may interfere with medications processed by these organs—especially antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, or medications for liver disease.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Limited data are available on safety during pregnancy, so it’s advisable for pregnant or nursing women to consult healthcare providers before use.

  • Allergic reactions: Hypersensitivity in some individuals may occur, particularly those allergic to other plants in the Phyllanthus genus or related species.

  • Overuse concerns: Excessive or prolonged intake can potentially lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, or renal distress—particularly if taken in high doses without medical supervision.

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting herbal therapy, especially if you’re on medication or have pre-existing health conditions.
