Herbal Extracts: What to Avoid, What to Seek

Processing is the medicine — or the thing that killed it

“Natural” on a label does not mean the plant is still in the jar. Drying temperature, solvent, and a cosmetic alkali bath decide whether you bought a remedy or brown dust.

Why the process matters

Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and volatile oils do not all survive the same factory. Vitamin C oxidizes. Essential oils leave with the heat. Polyphenols do not enjoy a caustic wash. Traditional Amazonian work is mostly water: long decoctions of bark and vine, latex collected from a slashed trunk, leaf infusions, powders of the whole plant. That is not nostalgia. It is a solvent choice.

Cocoa: the number we can actually cite

Cacao is the clearest industrial cautionary tale, and it is a plant of this continent. Natural cocoa is acidic and bitter because the flavanols are still there. Dutch processing — alkalization with potassium carbonate — darkens the powder, softens the taste, and wrecks the chemistry.

Miller and colleagues surveyed commercial cocoas. Natural powders averaged 34.6 mg/g total flavanols. Light alkali: 13.8. Medium: 7.8. Heavy: 3.9 — about 11% of the natural level (Miller et al. 2008). A Spanish market study put mean total flavonoid loss on alkalization at about 60%, with epicatechin hit harder than catechin (Andres-Lacueva et al. 2008). If you want cocoa as food-medicine, the tin should say natural or non-alkalized. Bitter is the point.

What wrecks other herbs

High-heat drying tunnels strip mint, guayusa, and anything you grow for smell. “Standardized to 3% alkaloid X” can mean the rest of the plant was thrown away. Cat’s claw is the Amazonian example: pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (POA) and tetracyclic ones (TOA) do different jobs. A fraction built to please a spec sheet is not the vine. Cheap hexane extracts exist in the oilseed industry; I want water or ethanol, and I want the producer to say so.

Bleached, deodorized, “instant” powders are made to look clean. Medicine is not a latte.

What to seek

  • Decoction, tincture, maceration, or whole ground bark/leaf — the methods this pharmacopoeia already uses.
  • Water and ethanol. CO2 for delicate oils. No mystery solvent.
  • Whole-spectrum over a single-molecule isolate, unless you have a reason to isolate.
  • A producer who states plant part, solvent, temperature, and ratio. Silence is a red flag.
  • For latex plants such as sangre de drago, the sap is the product. Powdered “dragon’s blood” from an unnamed tree is a different object.

The forest does not isolate one molecule. If your extract does, you should be able to say why.
