The Truth About Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca is not “a psychedelic” in the way a festival means it. It is a boiled marriage of two plants, a legal headache, and a ceremony that can go very wrong if you lie about your medicine cabinet.

The brew

The vine is Banisteriopsis caapi — harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine. The leaf is usually Psychotria viridis (chacruna) or, in parts of Colombia and Ecuador, Diplopterys cabrerana (chaliponga). Those leaves carry N,N-DMT. Swallow DMT alone and gut MAO-A destroys it. The vine’s β-carbolines are reversible MAO-A inhibitors; they let the DMT through. McKenna, Towers and Abbott measured that in Peruvian brews in 1984 (PMID 6587171). Some groups drink the vine alone. Some add tobacco, brugmansia, brunfelsia. Those admixtures change the risk.

Quechua aya-wasca is “vine of the dead / of souls.” Luna’s vegetalistas called the purge itself the teacher (Luna 1984).

What the clinic has actually shown

A Brazilian randomized trial — 29 people with treatment-resistant depression, one dose versus placebo — saw a real antidepressant signal at day 7 (64% vs 27% response) (Palhano-Fontes et al. 2019, PMC6378413). Small. Short. Hospital setting. Not a cure for trauma, cancer, or a marriage. Not a substitute for a psychiatrist you already have.

Law (not advice — facts)

DMT is scheduled under the 1971 UN Convention. The plants are often in a grey zone; the brew is prosecuted as DMT in many countries. In the United States, a handful of churches hold DEA exemptions after Gonzales v. O Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal (2006). That exemption is not portable to a yoga studio in Brno. In Peru the traditional practice is recognized in ways Europe does not copy. If you live in the EU, assume you do not have a ceremonial free pass until a lawyer who does this work says otherwise. I will not guess Czech case law on a blog.

Ceremony safety — non-negotiable

  • MAO-A + serotonergic drugs: SSRIs, SNRIs, some opioids, tramadol, St John’s wort, MDMA. Serotonin syndrome is not a vibe.
  • Tyramine: aged cheese, soy sauce, some beers — the old MAOI diet. See dieta.
  • Heart, uncontrolled blood pressure, epilepsy, liver, kidney.
  • Psychosis or mania in you or a close relative: this is a hard no for me.
  • Pregnancy. Animal data on high doses is ugly. Do not experiment.
  • A sober, experienced facilitator who will take your medication list. Icaros and a bucket are not optional folklore. They are how people get through the night.

If the facilitator says “stop your antidepressants on Tuesday and drink on Friday,” find another facilitator — and call the prescriber, not a forum.

The mystery can stay. The chemistry and the rules cannot be fuzzy.
